Dr. Julie L. McMullen, our optometrist, joined Paragon Ophthalmology in 2007. She performs comprehensive eye examinations, including diabetic eye exams, and works with patients of all ages. She specializes in contact lenses, including difficult to fit cases, and has participated in several contact lens studies. She is currently accepting new patients.
Dr. McMullen has been practicing in the Kalamazoo area since 1994 after graduating with high distinction from the Michigan College of Optometry. As a fourth year optometry student, she received the Pilkington-Barnes-Hind Student Recognition Award for her work with contact lenses, and the Bernell Clinical Optometry Award for her patient care. She completed her undergraduate education at Western Michigan University where she earned a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and Chemistry. She also earned a B.S. in Vision Sciences from Ferris State University.
Dr. McMullen is very active in the Michigan Optometric Association (MOA) and recently served as President of the MOA for 2019-20. She is also active in the American Optometric Association. She has served as president of the Southwest Michigan Optometric Association since 2008. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, and has been a continuing education course reviewer for the Council on Optometric Practitioner Education (COPE) since 2011. She has participated in VOSH Missions to Honduras in the past. She is currently pursuing her Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry.
In her spare time, Dr. McMullen enjoys traveling, scrapbooking, playing in the dirt (also known as gardening), photography, writing, and spending time with family.
